Research and Teaching Assistantships

Graduate Assistantships

Each applicant admitted to the graduate school is considered for available assistantships. Application for appointment as a graduate assistant is made to the student's graduate program director. There are several important stipulations to the graduate assistantship that the applicant should bear in mind:

  1. The applicant must possess full-time, degree-seeking status.
  2. Graduate Assistantships are awarded on a competitive basis.  Award decisions are usually made in early spring.
  3. State-funded assistantships are awarded to Ph.D. students only in programs offering the Ph.D. degree.

McLaughlin Fellowship

Graduate or medical students pursuing the study of infectious diseases or immunological research, or both, may request applications and information from McLaughlin Fellowship Office, Route 0665.

  1. One year prior enrollment in the graduate or medical program.
  2. A faculty mentor.
  3. Relevant research project.

National Health Service Corps

Scholarships and loan repayment programs are available from NHSC. Service commitment is a minimum of two years, and begins upon completion of your residency and/or training.

Armed Forces Health Professions Scholarship Program

A Health Professions Scholarship from any of the military services provides up to four years full tuition, all required fees, books and equipment, and a monthly stipend. In return for each year of support from one of the armed services, you must serve one year of active duty in that service or a minimum of two year's service-excluding periods of postgraduate professional education.

Minnie Stevens Piper Foundation

Educational loans are available through the student loan program of the Minnie Stevens Piper Foundation.  If you are a U.S. citizen/Permanent Resident and Texas resident attending a college or university within the state of Texas, you may be eligible for loans through this program.  Applicants must be enrolled full time, and be classified as a junior, senior, or graduate/professional student.  Loan applications are available online at www.mspf.org.
