A PERSONAL NOTE FROM DR. GNANASEKARAN

Hello there! Thank you for taking the time to get to know me, your physician. Good health is fundamental to a good life as a sound mind resides in a sound body. I became a doctor to help people improve the quality of their lives through their empowerment, health education, and strong longitudinal partnership with me on their health management. While so many factors can affect the well-being of our body, from genetics to mental/financial stress to environmental pollution to socio-economic-systemic inequities, I have faith that each person can be mentored to help themselves live their life to the fullest extent possible with customized consideration to their bio-psycho-social factors.

That is what drew me to medicine, the epigenetics, the ability to suppress your genetic lottery and environment through lifestyle modifications such as diet, exercise, responses to stress etc. I am a committed student of science and a lifelong learner. Reading books about cancer, DNA, immunity, etc., has created a curiosity and inquisitiveness about what causes diseases and how to treat it based on each individual’s culture-integrated lifestyle and evidence-based medicine.

Being a Family Medicine practitioner provides me with a unique opportunity to know the comprehensive medical condition of a patient and connect the dots between various organ systems, lifestyles, and history of the patient due to their longitudinal care with me.

I also enjoy having an open dialog with patients on how to achieve tangible goals to improve lifestyle disorders such as diabetes, hypertension, lipid disorders, immune disorders etc. My ultimate goal is to be the one stop shop physician for the good health of my patients’ families inter-generationally, from geriatrics, to obstetrics, to adults, to pediatric care, and never having to hand them over due to their growing up.

I have had the opportunity to work under experts in women’s health. This experience has taught me about the value of a woman’s health and how it influences lifestyle choices in a family.

To that end, I am extremely grateful to be at UTMB where I will continue to grow as a competent and a compassionate Physician under the guidance of great mentors who inspire and motivate me through their actions.

I have more hobbies and interests than any two persons I know. I am an avid book-reader, wilderness backpacker, award-winning artist, urban gardener, wannabe senior Wimbledon Tennis champion, aspiring comedian, a reluctant chef, people pleaser...yeah yeah, I think I am multi-faceted alright. Namaste :)

P.S: Current book recommendation: The myth of normal by Gabor Mate.
