UTMB Health Old Red

About Our Program

The University of Texas Medical Branch (UTMB Health) Family Medicine Residency Program was one of the first family medicine residency programs in the State of Texas, and has trained more than 390 physicians since accepting its first residents in 1971. Since 1971, our mission has been to educate physicians to the highest standards of medical practice, to provide the best possible care to our patients, and to expand the body of medical knowledge within family medicine through systematic observation and clinical research.

Our program is structured as a 12-12-12 program accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) with a total of 36 residents training annually.

Medical Curriculum

The curriculum of the UTMB Health Family Medicine Residency Program is shaped by several sources, including requirements of the ACGME, the American Board of Family Medicine (ABFM), and the program review committee utilizing information gained though the evaluation process. Our curriculum is primarily broken up into four-week blocks, with elective opportunities increasing as the resident progresses through their training. READ MORE....

Didactic Lectures, Conferences and Committees

Our didactic learning component is an 18-month curriculum, which ensure that every resident is exposed to lecture topics during their training. These sessions occur every Thursday afternoon from 1pm to 5pm. Lectures are geared to address topics based on RRC curriculum.

All Residency Meeting (ARM)
The ARM meeting is a monthly meeting to discuss news, updates, and changes to the residency program. The meeting is led by the program director and attended by faculty, residents, and program staff.

Ambulatory Clinic Report
Ambulatory Clinic Report (ACR) is a resident driven presentation during didactics that addresses a challenging outpatient clinical case. This experience is designed to emphasize Practice- Based Learning and Improvement and Systems Based Practice competencies. Other clinical competencies should also be evident during presentation. This is part of the PGY3 Capstone experience.

Journal Club
The purpose of our journal club is to appraise the evidence in published articles and to evaluate for clinical usability. All residents are required to present an article after they appraise and critic it. Residents and faculty discuss the findings and decide on the application to clinical practice. This is part of the PGY3 Capstone experience. We utilize the ABFM's National Journal Club for articles and discussions.

Morbidity & Mortality (M&M)
M&M is a monthly resident-run conference involving the analysis of adverse outcomes in-patient outcomes, through peer review. The objectives of the M&M conference are to identify adverse outcomes associated with medical error, to modify behavior and judgment based on previous experiences, and to prevent repetition of errors leading to complications.

Power Hour
"Power Hour" is a monthly 1-hour, resident led, board review session under the supervision of our program director Dr. Jamal Islam.

Resident-only meetings
The resident-only meeting is a monthly forum led by the chief residents and attended by the residents only to discuss residency issues.

Teamlet Meetings
Teamlet meetings are monthly clinic-specific meetings to discuss clinic issues or updates. The meetings are led by the clinic medical directors and attended by all the staff and clinicians from each clinic.
