Colin Hartwell joined UTMB in 2015 as a member of the Utilities Engineering team and has worked at all levels within the Business Operations and Facilities (BOF) team with a range of roles including engineering support, commissioning, maintenance manager, Director of Operations in the thermal utility plants and Associate Vice President of BOF.
Colin has been an integral part of several key projects at UTMB including, District Heating and Cooling - Hurricane Ike Recovery, East Thermal Utility Plant Construction, Utility Plant Optimization, League City Initial Plant Installation, League City Plant Expansion, and the establishment of our Clear Lake Campus.
His passion has always been leadership and applying his past experiences to lead and motivate the teams he is a part of. He will now be leading the entire Business Operations and Facilities teams which includes: Utility Operations, Design and Construction, Portfolio Management, Environmental Health and Safety, Fleet Services, Courier Services and Auxiliary Services.
Before joining UTMB, Colin served as a Captain in the United States Air Force as an aircraft commander and instructor pilot for the C-5 and C-21. During his service, he flew several combat and combat support missions in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom, Operation Enduring Freedom and Operation New Dawn.
Colin earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Astronautical Engineering from The United States Air Force Academy in 2008, a Master of Science degree from American Military University in 2014 and a Master of Business Administration degree from the University of Texas in 2018. He is a Certified Energy Manager, Certified Energy Procurement Professional and Certified Healthcare Facility Manager.
