On behalf of the faculty, residents, and staff, I want to welcome you to the Department of Neurosurgery at the University of Texas Medical Branch (UTMB). The program, one of Texas's oldest, is committed to clinical care, education, and scientific research.
Established in 1955 by Dr. Snodgrass, our program has expanded and today the UTMB Neurosurgery Program covers the Jennie Sealy Hospital, the UTMB Health Clear Lake Campus Hospital, and the UTMB Health League City Campus Hospital, both at Galveston
and in the Houston area.
Our faculty specializes in the surgical treatment of adults and children with neurological diseases. By working in multidisciplinary teams and partnering with our colleagues, we provide our patients with comprehensive and individualized care for their
neurosurgical problems. Our programs include cerebrovascular, spine, pediatrics, functional/epilepsy, and stereotactic radiosurgery.
We believe that the advance in research ultimately translates to better patient care. Our research program encompasses clinical trials, translational, and basic science research. Through ongoing trials, we offer our patients cutting-edge therapy, and
translational/basic science research helps to develop novel therapeutics for future patients. The research programs in our department are supported by the National Institutes of Health (NIH), private foundations, and philanthropy.
In addition to clinical excellence and research, we are also committed to post-graduate medical training and undergraduate medical education. All of our faculty participate in the teaching of medical students. With regards to postgraduate training, we
offer an ACGME accredited residency training program. Our residency program is the oldest training program in Texas with multiple training sites in Galveston and Houston, including the above UTMB hospitals and Texas Children’s Hospital. Our
commitment is to train well-rounded and excellent neurosurgeons for the future.
It is my privilege to serve as the Chair of the Department of Neurosurgery, ensuring that we fulfill our missions and deliver exceptional and compassionate care to our patients and their families. Whether you are a patient or a student, I invite you to
explore our program and website in detail, and I am confident that we will be able to provide you with outstanding care and training.
