Organizational Structure

The Experimental Pathology Graduate Program organizational plan includes a Director, a Program Coordinator, and an Executive Committee with representatives that include chairs of four Program subcommittees. (Figure 1)

Experimental Pathology Graduate Faculty Committees

1. Executive Committee

  1. The committee is composed of the program director and chairs of the other three standing committees.
  2. The committee appoints and replaces the members and chairs of the other committees. Goals for committee composition are that each committee is representative of program strengths and blends enthusiasm with experience.
  3. At least twice per year, schedule meetings of the entire graduate program faculty.
  4. Appoint ad hoc committees to address problems or concerns.
  5. Annually review contributions of all graduate program faculty to graduate and interdisciplinary courses, laboratory rotations, program committees, and student committees.

2. Admissions and Recruitment Committee

  1. The committee is composed of six members representing different areas of program strength and one student representative.
  2. The committee is in charge of all program recruitment activities including recruitment materials and media.
  3. Recruit applicants and coordinate program recruiting efforts with GSBS.
  4. Review applications and make recommendations on admissions.
  5. Make recommendations on supplemental stipend awards.
  6. Actively recruit all outstanding candidates and ensure smooth transition after admission.
  7. The committee will meet as needed during the GSBS open admissions (Dec-April).
  8. The chair of the Admissions & Recruitment committee shall serve on the GSBS/BBSC Admissions Committee.

3. Curriculum and Academic Planning Committee

The committee consists of seven members with relevant experience in graduate student education and one student representative.

  1. Annually monitor and evaluate all program core courses using student and faculty feedback. Make recommendations for course improvements.
  2. Make recommendations concerning development and approval of new courses.
  3. Examine credentials of faculty wishing to become members of the Experimental Pathology Graduate Faculty and make recommendations concerning such faculty appointments.
  4. The chairman of this committee serves on the Graduate School Curriculum Committee.
  5. The committee meets at least once per semester. The committee chairman ensures the preparation and distribution of the minutes of each meeting within 30 days of the meeting.

4. Student Evaluation and Advisory Committee

  1. The committee consists of six members representing different areas of program strength and one student representative.
  2. Review student and faculty reports of laboratory rotations.
  3. Monitor the course grades, rotation and research reports, and progress of each student at least twice per year to ensure early detection of problems.
  4. Serve on student Preliminary Examination Committees.
  5. Oversee the Preliminary Examination process and make recommendations for modification when or where needed.
  6. Help students select a dissertation supervisory professor and supervisory committee.
  7. The committee meets at least once per semester. The committee chairman ensures the preparation and distribution of the minutes of each meeting within 30 days of the meeting.
