The UTMB Neuroradiology Fellowship Program has been in existence since 1980. The fellowship is a one year ACGME-accredited program with a total of two positions available every year.

We closely collaborate with our colleagues in the Departments of Neurology, Neurological Surgery, Ophthalmology, Otolaryngology, and Radiation Oncology which provides a stimulating academic and collegial atmosphere through daily interactions during readout sessions, conferences, and Grand Rounds.

The one-year fellowship program aims to give fellows a sound background in all aspects of neuroradiology including head and neck and pediatric imaging, with an opportunity to learn and achieve competence in minimally invasive diagnostic and therapeutic spine procedures. Fellows will also assist in diagnostic and therapeutic neuroendovascular procedures and stroke intervention. UTMB is a DNV certified comprehensive stroke center and provides the entire range of Neuroendovascular procedures. Fellows will also have exposure to advanced imaging techniques including diffusion tensor imaging, fMRI, CT/MR perfusion, spectroscopy, Neuroquant software and intraoperative MRI.

The training program usually consists of two fellows rotating at our Galveston and Clear Lake Campuses. Both fellows will be responsible for the daily volume of neuroimaging studies. Fellows will prepare and present at interdisciplinary conferences including neurosurgery tumor board, head and neck tumor board, and interesting case conferences with the neurology residents. A month-long neurointerventional radiology rotation is also provided. Fellows will have the opportunity to become proficient and independent in therapeutic spine procedures including epidural steroid injections, facet blocks, and image-guided lumbar punctures and myelograms.

Two to three residents will also rotate through the neuroradiology section on month-long rotations, and fellows are expected to supervise residents and rotating medical students including assisting with questions regarding procedure protocolling. The fellow will be expected to create and present one full-length didactic lecture on a topic of his/her choosing for the noon resident conferences over the course of the year. Fellows are also expected to participate in and contribute to a monthly intradepartmental journal club and weekly interesting case conference.

In-house moonlighting opportunities to take general weekend call may be available for eligible candidates. 

The trainee is encouraged to participate in ongoing and/or new research in the section, and at least one abstract or manuscript submission to a major societal meeting or journal is expected. The faculty are available for guidance and mentoring. Attendance at annual scientific meetings is encouraged and fully supported. Completion of a quality improvement project is also required.

Numerous up-to-date textbooks as well as a subscription to STATdx are available to the trainee in the reading room and faculty offices. Teaching files are available to the trainee. In addition, fellows are provided an educational fund to purchase additional didactic material as they see fit. Fellows are provided individual offices furnished with desktop computers.

The fellowship participates in the National Residency Matching Program (NRMP). Interested applicants must submit a complete ERAS application form. The application must include three letters of recommendation, one of which must be from the residency program director. Applicants must also submit a medical school transcript and a Dean's letter. Foreign medical graduates should hold a current ECFMG certificate and have either permanent resident status or a J-1 visa.

2024-2025 Applications for fellowship accepted through the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS) for the December application cycle.

Virtual interviews will be conducted for all fellowship positions this year.

• Completed an ACGME approved residency in Diagnostic Radiology prior to entering the fellowship and be American Board of Radiology eligible or certified.
• Foreign medical graduates with requisite radiology training outside of the United States are also encouraged to apply.
• Visa Status: J-1 visa sponsorship available.
