The Caregiver and Patient Support Study (CAPSS)

Interviews to assess the needs and support of patients with mild cognitive impairment or Alzheimer’s disease and related Dementias (MCI/ADRD) and their caregivers

Unfortunately, millions of older adults face neglect and mistreatment through the use of money, resources, or property by others without permission. This project aims to create a screening tool to help protect older adults and improve referrals for support and services.

We are seeking volunteers who:

  • Have been diagnosed with OR are a caregiver of someone diagnosed with mild cognitive impairment or Alzheimer’s disease and related Dementia
  • NOTE: Patients with MCI/ADRD must be 55+ years of age AND have received care at a primary care clinic.

Interviews with patients will address:
  • Positive and negative factors for elder mistreatment
  • Relationship experiences
  • Emotional and social needs
  • Healthcare experiences

Interviews with caregivers will address:

  • Caregiving experiences
  • Sources of stress
  • Strategies to reduce stress
  • Knowledge of elder mistreatment
  • Challenges with seeking care or support

We are also seeking volunteers who:

  • Are a UTMB healthcare provider (social worker, nurse, nurse practitioner, or physician) in a primary care setting
  • Have experience working with patients diagnosed with MCI/ADRD

Monique R. Pappadis, MEd, PhD, FACRM is the Principal Investigator of this study. This study is supported by a grant from the National Institute on Aging. Volunteers will be compensated for their participation.
