Sealy Center on Aging

The ACE Unit Functional Laboratory is used to measure function and body composition in hospitalized geriatric research participants. It includes a 400 sq ft physical function testing and DEXA area as well as 150 sq ft study coordinator office. Nutritional and functional assessments, body composition, cognitive and quality of life tests are performed in the ACE Unit Functional lab.

The Biorepository and Mass Spectrometry Laboratories (~3,000 sq ft). It has a satellite laboratory (approximately 300 sq ft) for the initial processing of human samples located on the 4th floor of the John Sealy Annex Building. The inter-connecting labs in the Medical Research Building allow for science collaboration among researchers interested in muscle biology and metabolism in aging.

The Exercise Training and Testing Laboratories contains Hoist and Precor exercise equipment used for clinical research in physical activity, exercise and fitness training, and recovery and rehabilitation for muscle health. Equipment includes modern resistance exercise machines, free weights and cardiovascular equipment. The research lab is utilized by faculty, PhD students and postdoctoral fellows and all research and training within the lab are supervised by doctoral-level exercise physiologists.

The aim of the UTMB Mass Spectrometry Facility is to assemble state-of-the-art instrumentation, highly skilled technical staff and methodology to provide experimental capabilities required to support faculty driven research programs. The Mass Spectrometry Facility serves as the hub of the UT-System Proteomics Network and is well-equipped with a suite of LC-MS systems including the ThermoScientific Fusion Orbitrap MS, the Sciex 5600 TripleTof, 6500 Qtrap, and 5800 Maldi TofTof. The core provides a range of services.

Metabolic Phenotyping is a joint resource of the Sealy Center on Aging, Department of Surgery, and the Center for Recovery, Physical Activity and Nutrition that includes the following facilities:

The Metabolic Testing Laboratory is located on the 10th floor of the Medical Research Building room 10.136 (535 sq. ft.). It is supervised by Dr. Volpi, E: evolpi@utmb.edu, P: (409) 747-1987.

The Burn, Trauma, and Critical Care Research Laboratory is located in the Basic Science Building, rooms 529, 539, and 548, a combined space of approximately 1,700 sq. ft. It is directed by Dr. Murton, E: ajmurton@utmb.edu, P: (409) 772-0185.

The Mouse Functional Testing Laboratory is located on the 10th floor of Medical Research Building, room 10.124 (350 sq ft). It is supervised by Dr. Maroto, E: rmaroto@utmb.edu, P: (409) 457-6339

The Molecular Genetics Facility Next Gen Sequencing & Molecular Genetics provides UTMB researchers access to cutting-edge technologies in functional genomics.

The Muscle Biology Laboratory is a component of the 5,000 sq. ft. of wet lab space for researchers from the Department of Biochemistry & Molecular Biology and the Sealy Center on Aging. The Transgenic Mouse Core Facility (TMCF) is located on the ground floor of the Medical Research Building (MRB). The major portion of the first floor of the MRB is dedicated to one of UTMB’s central animal facilities, which is managed by the Animal Resource Center (ARC).
