Clinical Laboratory Sciences

Through multiple levels of education, from undergraduate through doctoral, medical laboratory science students become an integral part of healthcare team by performing, managing and interpreting laboratory tests. Bachelor of Science graduates find employment in clinical and research laboratories, Master of Science graduates obtain research, teaching and managerial positions in academia, clinical laboratories and in industry and Doctoral graduates provide a critical interface across the healthcare system needed to assure improved patient outcomes and cost-effective patient care through consultative services.

Accreditation

The MLS Program is accredited by the National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Sciences (NAACLS) until October 31, 2027.

  • The UTMB MLS program was the first academically-based program in Texas and the Southwestern U.S.
  • Our program was first "approved" by the American Society of Clinical Pathologists Board of Registry in 1937.
  • The program received the maximum allowed NAACLS accreditation of 10 years in 2017.
  • UTMB Pathologists’ Assistant program was accredited by NAACLS in 2022.
  • In 2016, the UTMB Department of Clinical Laboratory Science implemented the first Doctorate in Clinical Laboratory Science (DCLS) program in Texas and is accredited by NAACLS.
