Fast FactsThe Department of Physical Therapy changed its department name to the Department of Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation Sciences (PTRS) in December 2023.In August 2021, the UTMB Department of Physical Therapy implemented a Hybrid track DPT program, the first of its kind at a public institution in the state of Texas. The Hybrid track offers the DPT program in a blended online/onsite model, with coursework done remotely and during an immersion week at midterm and finals of each semester. Students in the hybrid are able to participate in electives and service opportunities as well and experience 30 weeks of clinical education.Currently, the U. S. News ranks Physical Therapists as #10 in best health jobs and #28 in 100 best jobs.The first physical therapy training program in Texas began in 1943 at the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston.In 2015, the UTMB Department of Physical Therapy implemented the first Bridge PTA to DPT program in Texas. Currently, there is only one other similar program in the nation.
