Epidemiology - MPH

The Master of Public Health (MPH) in Epidemiology concentration at The University of Texas Medical Branch (UTMB) prepares students to study patterns of disease, identify health risks, and apply evidence to improve population health.

Students gain the knowledge, skills, and values needed for careers in federal, state, and local government; hospitals and health systems; nonprofit and non-governmental organizations; research settings; and other public health roles.

The Epidemiology concentration trains students to contribute to the protection and promotion of health in human populations through rigorous study design, data analysis, and applied public health practice.

After completing the coursework, students are able to:

  1. Evaluate basic epidemiologic measures of disease occurrence and association.
  2. Differentiate between descriptive and analytic epidemiology of health risk factors and health-related outcomes to control and prevent disease in populations
  3. Compare the relative strengths and limitations of epidemiologic study designs used in public health
  4. Develop epidemiologic research study protocol, including research hypotheses
  5. Explain sources of bias and confounding in epidemiologic research.
  6. Identify quality data sources and apply analytical techniques to inform public health research, policy or practice.
