Medicine and Public Health Dual Degree - MD/MPH

The MD/MPH dual degree allows UTMB medical students to complete the MPH within the four years of medical school.

Advantages of Pursuing the MD/MPH Dual Degree

Areas of Interest
Supports study in research, global health, infectious disease, health care services and systems, and the social determinants of health.
Time
Eliminates an additional year of study. Shared credits between the John Sealy School of Medicine and School of Public and Population Health reduce the requirement to 30 hours, compared to 42 for the traditional MPH.
Cost
MPH costs cover tuition only. Fees are paid once through the John Sealy School of Medicine, not duplicated for the graduate degree.
Residency Match
Dual-degree graduates may be more competitive applicants including for residency programs that value physicians' understanding of population-level determinants of health, particularly programs that emphasize public health perspectives.

The UTMB MPH graduates in the Public Health Leadership Concentration are expected to master the following competencies:

  1. Design strategic leadership and change management initiatives to real-life challenges that drive transformative population health improvements across healthcare, public health, or community-based systems.
  2. Develop and evaluate policies and advocacy campaigns that address access to care and health literacy with the goal of improving patient outcomes at local, national, and/or global levels.
  3. Communicate public health concepts, research findings, and policy recommendations to build trust and promote informed decision-making among a broad range of audiences.
  4. Integrate information and resources to make evidence-informed decisions for patients and populations.
  5. Select public health and social services resources to address health-related needs in populations and individuals.
