Burn Surgery

Steven Wolf, MD

Welcome to the Division of Burn, Trauma, and Acute Care Surgery in the Department of Surgery at the University of Texas Medical Branch. At five hospitals, we provide surgical acute care services and critical care for our expanding population in south and east Texas, with one American College of Surgeons Committee on Trauma verified Level 1 Trauma Center, one Level 2, and two Level 3 centers. We also have two American Burn Association verified Burn Centers, one caring for adults and one at the Shriners’ hospital dedicated to the care of burned children. These centers provide comprehensive care for the injured and the acutely ill with surgical conditions ranging from Emergency Department visits to all manner of surgical operations, critical care, and definitive management, performing approximately 2500 surgical operations/year. For educational opportunities, we have an accredited one-year Surgical Critical Care Fellowship with two fellows per year, and we offer a full breadth of training for surgical residents and medical students.

Our division is world-renowned for clinical and basic science research in burns, trauma, and critical care. In 2022, faculty in the Division listed 35 unique publications with $1.5M annually in competitive grant funding. The Division has three funded research fellowships for burns and trauma investigations, two NIH sponsored T32 positions and an endowed fellowship from British Petroleum. Many graduates from these research fellowships have gone on to highly sought faculty positions and leadership roles around the world.

Sincerely,
