Faculty Profile

  • Dr. David Wei received his MBBS in Clinical Medicine from Binzhou Medical College in China. He followed this with an M. Med. in Pathology from Tongji Medical University, also in China. Dr. Wei furthered his education by graduating with a PhD in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology from the National University of Singapore.

    After obtaining his PhD, Dr. Wei remained at the National University of Singapore where he served as a post-doctoral fellow, training in Pediatric Nephrology. He followed this with another post-doctoral fellowship at Massachusetts General Hospital, Harvard Medical School, Boston, MA. Here, he focused on Podocyte Biology and Glomerular Kidney Disease.

    Prior to joining UTMB Health, Dr. Wei served as a Professor in the Department of Internal Medicine at Rush University in Chicago, IL where he had been a faculty member since 2012.

    Dr. Wei is an accomplished academic with an extensive history of teaching and research activity. Using state of the art technology, his current grant projects seek to gain insights on how viral infection causes kidney disease, and how suPAR, a circulating immune factor triggers kidney fibrosis.
