The Role of the Title IX Office:

UTMB is committed to maintaining a learning and working environment that is free from discrimination based on sex. Sexual harassment, sexual assault, relationship violence, stalking, and retaliation subvert the mission of UTMB. The Title IX Office works to ensure all university members have a safe place free from discrimination in which to learn and serve. Any person (student, faculty or staff) who believes that discriminatory practices have been engaged in based upon gender may discuss their concerns and file informal or formal complaints of possible violations of Title IX with the UTMB Title IX Coordinator.

Notice of Non-Discrimination

The University of Texas Medical Branch (UTMB) is committed to maintaining a safe environment. In accordance with state and federal laws, including but not limited to Title VI and Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, UTMB prohibits discrimination against individuals on the basis of race, color, national origin, sex, pregnancy, age, religion, disability, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, genetic information, and veteran status. Students who are parents of children under the age of eighteen are also protected against discrimination. In accordance with Title IX of the Higher Education Amendments of 1972 (Title IX), which prohibits discrimination on the basis of sex in educational programs or activities, and other applicable laws, such as Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, the Campus Sexual Violence Elimination Act, the Violence Against Women Act and the Clery Act, UTMB prohibits sexual misconduct, dating violence, domestic violence, stalking and retaliation. This includes but is not limited to employment, health care services, education programs or activities, admissions, financial aid, and access to UTMB programs, facilities or services. This policy applies to all UTMB administrators, faculty, staff, students, and third parties within UTMB’s control. Prohibited conduct will not be tolerated and will be subject to disciplinary action.

Responsible Employees have a duty to promptly report incidents of sexual misconduct to the Title IX Coordinator. Confidential Employees have the duty to promptly report the type of incident to the Title IX Coordinator. Any person can report incidents of sex discrimination, including sexual misconduct, by electronic mail, in person, by telephone, using the contact information listed for UTMB’s Title IX Coordinator or by any other means that result in the Title IX Coordinator receiving the person’s verbal or written report. Such a report may be made at any time, including non-business hours by using the telephone number or electronic mail address or by mail to the office address listed for the Title IX Coordinator.

Inquiries about the application of Title IX and 20 U.S.C. 1681 §106.8 may be referred to UTMB’s Title IX Coordinator, to the Assistant Secretary of Education, or both. All UTMB employees, students, and volunteers shall be allowed to freely discuss and raise questions to managers or to the appropriate personnel about situations they feel are in violation of federal and state law, UTMB and/or UT System policy, and/or accreditation and regulatory requirements. UTMB will not intimidate, threaten, coerce, discriminate against, or take any retaliatory action against any employee, student, volunteer, patient, legally authorized representative, association, organization or group who participate in such good faith actions.
