Center for Large Data Research and Data Sharing in Rehabilitation

Dr. Gulshan Sharma discusses Electronic Health Records for research, including the current local, national, and international landscapes, as well as future directions and questions to ask before going into EHR medical research.

Dr. Steven Cramer, Dr. Liam Johnson, Dr. Sook-Lei Liew, Dr. Keith Lohse and Dr. Ken Ottenbacher present information on big data for rehabilitation. They discuss limitations and considerations as well as current applications of ‘big data’ approaches for rehabilitation research across collections of behavioral, neuroimaging, and clinical outcomes data.

Dr. Ken Ottenbacher discusses large data research and gives an introduction to big data challenges and opportunities. He shares resources including education and training available through CLDR, as well as the data directory, pilot project program and visiting scholars program. He also discusses data sharing and archiving opportunities. 

Dr. George Alter provides an overview of research studies conducted using Medicare claims and other large datasets in the context of post-acute care settings (inpatient rehabilitation facility, skilled nursing facility, and home health agency). Topics include the availability of large datasets for disability, rehabilitation, and occupational therapy research and new federal initiative related to data sharing.

Dr. Craig Thornton offers a discussion of developing health policy for collaboration between providers and evaluators in healthcare. He describes quality improvement efforts, systems change approaches and partnerships for patients.

Joachim Roski, PhD, MPH, Principal, Booz Allen Hamilton offers a discussion of how healthcare is shifting and big data. Dr. Roski discusses the difference between big data and large data, and what has been found through working with organizations. 

Presented by Barbara J. Gage, PhD, MBA Managing Director, Engelberg Center for HealthCare Reform and Fellow of Economic Studies, The Brookings Institute. Dr. Gage discusses the Affordable Care Act's aim to improve quality of care and bring down costs as well as assessments and instruments to examine care.
